4 of Stoke-on-Trent's Best on Film & TV Appearances

From cobbled streets and vintage industrial structures right through to the rolling Staffordshire countryside, Stoke-on-Trent and its surrounding areas are as diverse as they are beautiful.

For this very reason, Stoke-on-Trent has appeared in film and on TV more times than you might think.

Okay, these productions may not be big-budget Hollywood Blockbusters but they are quality nonetheless and serve to highlight the rich cultural heritage of The Potteries.

Without further ado, here are four times that Stoke-on-Trent proudly featured on the big or small screen, as picked by us...

SoulBoy

This homegrown coming of age film directed by Shimmy Marcus is focused on 17-year-old Joe McCain and his trials and tribulations during the height of the 1974 Northern Soul movement.

Set in Stoke-on-Trent, the film features many of the city's most iconic places and serves as the perfect backdrop for this musically inspiring romantic misadventure.

The Mothertown

Who doesn't like a good zombie flick? Directed by John Williams of Wolstanton, this low-budget, high-octane, flesh-eating zombie film is surprisingly brilliant and not only boasts plenty of prime Stoke-based location filming, but also appearances from lots of local actors - and a cameo from a cameo from TV presenter Nick Hancock.

In a Land of Plenty

This Staffordshire slice of life drama from the BBC gained a strong following during the time it was aired and as most of the show was filmed in the Staffordshire Moorlands and market town of Leek, the backdrop is breathtaking. A must watch, especially if you want to see how many places you can spot.

The Girl With All The Gifts

Despite what we said earlier, Stoke-on-Trent has featured in a pretty big budget Hollywood flick. It may not be widely known, but this film has earned a real cult following, and one of the scenes was filmed at the old Hanley Bus Station it also features a few other fleeting shots of the city centre. Starring Glenn Close, Gemma Arterton, and Paddy Considine, this gripping dystopian drama is well worth a watch - don’t miss out.

Pretty impressive to say the least. Oh, and have you ever been to the mighty Middleport Pottery? That was on the telly too.
